The client, an American expatriate in Beijing, wanted an apartment that would balance the best of Western residential design with a nod to the Eastern aesthetic and lifestyle, while avoiding the clichés which often plague such attempts. The design is a compositional study of a variety of traditional Chinese building materials re-set into contemporary applications. 

Bamboo plank flooring, continuous lacquered wall surfaces and glazed ceramic tile details deliver local context. The bespoke furniture pieces influenced by the mid-century modern style bridges the cultural history of the owners.
